if you want to talk about individual athletes, Bozeman has it covered there too. Huge kids in Will Weyer at QB and Will Disley at TE
Ennis went further in last year's playoffs, has arguably the best player in 8-Man in Connor Sullivan. Good size, athletes, depth. Right now, I think Ennis might be a little more "proven" (I'm not sure that's the right word) than Wibaux, but I did pick the Longhorns to win the state title.
Frenchtown is much faster than last year but a lot of those kids are young. I think they lost 17 starters so the turnover there will really affect them, especially early.
As for Ronan. HUUUUGE is the word I'm looking for. 11 kids over 200 pounds, which is a ton for a school of that size. They'll push people around once they learn to use that weight right.
Back to standout players ... some other guys to watch (probably not FBS guys): Love Joe Zimmer at Billings Senior. He has a good connection with his WRs, too. Bliss Collins at Capital is off to a nice start. The Arntson kid at Helena High is a good player. Luke Schwagler, Gage Adams, Chris Nile are nice players at Forsyth. Casey Cole (freshman QB) is a player to watch down the line, too.
Malta still has a legit RB. Drawing a blank on his name right now. Boyd Reike (not sure on spelling) at Bigfork. Wyatt McKinlay from Geraldine. Cooper Olson from Westby. Connor Sullivan (Ennis), Zach Molyneaux (Chinook) and Chase Bertelsen (Wibaux) are top 8-Man players. Almost forgot about Shayne Cochran from Culbertson-Bainville, too.
We're going for 15 more minutes. Get your questions or comments in!
AJ, I was surprised by the Ronan-Eureka score. Do you have any insight?
Don't know if he's college ready or not but I like whatHot Springs' QB Tanner Hoff is doing. Throws for 285 yards and six touchdowns in 6man, which is pretty impressive
First Hometown Pride, I think Frenchtown has the edge, especially if its played a little later in the year after those kids get some experience. They do have a dynamic back in Gus Butler who ran for 228 yards on 13 carries last week.
Ronan-Eureka game was a close one until a couple late scores. The thing that stood out to me most was that the same kid picked up two safeties in the game.
I think Westby-Grenora is probably the favorite in the Eastern C right now. But I do think Savage, Terry and the likes will challenge them. I'm going to call Westby-Grenora coach Troy Walters after the chat, so I'll have a better feel after talking with him.
One kid at two safeties? That's twice as many as I had in my entire 8-Man career!
Totally. Tyler Anderson had two tackles in the end zone. Brilliant.
OK, AJ, we're almost out of time ... give me your games of the week, one for each class.
Well Glacier and Bozeman is the easy one for AA. Then I'm interested to see what Dillon can do at Laurel, I think that's where we find out if they can hang at that top this season.
I'm going a little homer-ish with Loyola at B. Mostly I just want to see the Rams in action this season with Matt McHugh at QB, even if it is against Manhattan.
I don't know if I have enough info on C from across the state to give much insight on this week yet. Fill me in?
I'm not disagreeing with AA, A or B picks. But I'll throw out some alternatives.
In AA, Butte at CMR is a pretty big game. It's almost a must win for both teams. A Butte win and CMR is 0-3. A CMR win and both teams are 1-2.
In A, I like Dillon-Laurel. I'll add Anaconda-Hardin. Both teams got wins last week, but it should be an interesting cross-state clash there.
Lots of good Class B games again, but the best on this side of the state looks to be Glasgow at Baker.
Real quick on Class C ... I like the Belt/Power-Dutton-Brady game and the Geraldine-Highwood/Denton-Stanford-Geyser games.
That's going to do it for us. Thanks for joining our chat. Appreciate the questions and comments.
We're just about to get started with the prep football chat. We have AJ Mazzolini of the Missoulian and Slim Kimmel of the Billings Gazette on hand to discuss the season so far. If you have questions, fire them in!
