We're just about to get started with our live prep football chat. We've got Troy Shockley from the Helena IR and Slim Kimmel from the Billings Gazette on hand.
OK, guys, let's get things rolling. First off, let's just get the first impressions from the AA season. Things kicked off last weekend.
AJ, I have a question for you right off the bat ... is Missoula Sentinel for real?
Well, mtfbfan, my predictions for all classes ... I'm taking Bozeman in AA. They looked solid all the way around in their win against Skyview. In Class A, I think things are pretty wide open. But I'll go with another Central-Dillon championship. Class B: How about some teams from western Montana? Bigfork and Missoula Loyola in the title. 8-Man: I took Wibaux to win that one. And 6-Man, I have the new co-op at Denton-Stanford-Geyser.
Guess that mean's we gone.
Sentinel travels to Bozeman this week, right? I think that one will tell us a little more about the Spartans.
Troy, what are your thoughts on the big Butte-Capital game this week?
Moving on to Class A ... there weren't very many Class A games last weekend. But this weekend features some good matchups: Dillon-Polson, Billings Central-Belgrade, and Laurel-Stevensville could all be interesting games.
Speaking of Butte, anybody else as surprised as I was that they only scored 26 points against Senior?
I do think Senior will surprise some people this year (no, I'm not picking them to win the title). But I thought Butte would do more offensively. I did hear that they had a couple drives stall in the redzone, though, so that makes a difference.
For you Class B fans out there (and I think there are a lot of you), I'm heading to the Forsyth-Red Lodge game on Friday. Looking forward to a great game between two programs on the upswing, even after graduating their starting QBs.
Butte fans love when I pick against their team, so I'm picking Capital to win that game, too.
Rod, I was STUNNED by Sidney's win. For weeks, I had heard about how Livingston was a team to watch this season. To only put up six points was very surprising.
That being said, when I talked to coach Mike Ludwig at Laurel, he mentioned that Sidney was improving. But I still don't see the Eagles surpassing Central, Laurel, Miles City or Hardin in the Eastern A.
West is young. I didn't expect them to fare well after that long road trip, but I certainly didn't see a 43-7 loss coming. The Bears will get better as the season progresses. I still think they'll be in the mix for a playoff spot. I'm chalking that game up to more me underestimating Glacier than overestimating West.
Yeah, Richie. It's a fun weekend for you guys up in that Great Falls area. It'll be interesting to see how CMR bounces back this week. And I love that Loyola-Fairfield game.
What are your guys' predictions for Loyola-Fairfield? Neither team is really from my area so-to-speak ...
Haha. Way to pick a side and stick with it. I believe Fairfield is breaking in a new QB as well.
I'm not afraid to go out on a limb. I'll take Loyola, 22-18. #FootballScore
Loyola: Three touchdowns, two PATs, one two-point conversion. Fairfield: Two touchdowns, two two-point conversions, safety.
Great question from @mcchaff on Twitter: @SlimKimmel in your early season assessment, which billings AA school has the best shot at making a playoff run?
Preseason I said Skyview. With Drake Schafer's injury against Bozeman, I'm tempted to change that, but I still think the Falcons will be able to control the game with their running attack.
Yeah, Richie, Senior was probably most impressive in Week 1. I'm interested in watching all the Billings schools progress over the season.
I almost put the Tri Cities game on my list of games of the week. Should be a good one there. Obviously, Geraldine-Highwood at Hot Springs is the top 6-Man game. Should be fun.
OK, we made it an hour. Thanks to those that participated. We'll try again next week.
